Signing Day Profile: Tennessee 4-star defensive tackle Charles Mosley

Though Charles Mosley officially committed to Tennessee in December, his pledge came as no surprise. Mosley attended camp in Knoxville in June, visited during fall camp, and named Tennessee as his leader shortly after visiting in August. Mosley made trips to campus unofficially for two games this season before taking his official visit on November 22nd. Despite a few visits to Alabama, Mosley knew he was going to end up in orange.

“I went to Tennessee and I just fell in love. I had a lot of friends tell me when I started going to Knoxville, I’d start loving it…I just have a great relationship with Coach [Butch] Jones,” Mosley told Tennessee Sports Radio.

With the departure of Dan McCullers, Mosley will be the largest player on the team once he enrolls this summer. The Vols are the only team in the nation to not return a starter on either the offensive or defensive line. As with Tennessee’s other committed linemen, he’ll have a chance to prove himself and earn early playing time.

He’ll have to reshape his body to play at an SEC-level. How quickly he can do that is likely to determine how early he sees the field. In Mosley, Tennessee is getting a player who could address needs on either side of the ball. He’s likely to start out at tackle but could move to offensive guard depending on his development.

The Basics: Rated as a 4-star prospect by Scout and 247Sports and a 3-star prospect by Rivals and ESPN, Mosley is a mammoth 6-5, 350 pound defensive tackle/offensive guard from Brighton, Tennessee (Brighton). Mosley is ranked as a top-300 prospect nationally and as the No. 6 prospect in the state by 247Sports. He chose Tennessee over Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, Mississippi State, Georgia, and others.

Scouting Reports: “Mosley is a big body in the middle of the defensive line. He is a true space-eater that carries 350-pounds well. He plays with good strength and he can really push the pocket back into the backfield. Mosely has shown he can play through double-teams on the high school level. He needs to improve on his pad level and his consistency off the ball. He can work his hands, but needs to disengage better.” – Chad Simmons

“A prospect that possesses excellent height and carries a great deal of bulk on his frame. Does need to watch how he adds additional size and could likely benefit from reworking his body composition some and playing a little lighter. Flashes a good initial burst for his size…Mosley has little trouble manhandling his current competition, but also looks to quite often enjoy a big size difference and needs to continue to develop his technique. A move to offensive line is also a possibility at the next level.” – ESPN.com
