UPDATE: Tennessee targeting Mike White for head coaching job

According to Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com, Tennessee’s search to replace Cuonzo Martin has turned to Louisiana Tech’s Mike White.  Tuesday, we reported that sources at Louisiana Tech thought White could end up in Knoxville. White and Southern Mississippi’s Donnie Tyndall have been among the favorites for the job since Cuonzo bolted for California. A Louisiana Tech source said White could not be reached for comment and that he’s out of town this weekend.

whiteWhite’s three years on the job have seen the Bulldogs go 74-31 (70.5%), win two regular season conference championships, and receive their first ranking in the AP Poll in over 20 years. In the 10 years before he took over, Louisiana Tech averaged 15 wins and 16 losses a season.  He’s making $600,000 a year and has a $600,000 buyout. Before taking the head job at LA Tech, he spent seven seasons as an assistant at Ole Miss where he also played for four years (1995-99). He has extensive recruiting ties in the SEC and developed a reputation as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation at Ole Miss.

After inheriting a 12-20 team, White’s Bulldogs went 18-16 his first season as a head coach. In year two they went 27-7, including a school-record 18-game winning streak. They finished the 2013-14 campaign with a 29-8 mark which tied a program-record for wins. Notable wins last season include a 102-98 overtime victory at Oklahoma (who went on to earn a 5-seed in the NCAA Tournament) and a 79-71 win at Georgia (who finished 3rd in the SEC and had a 15-3 home record). Also of note, Louisiana Tech is 32-1 in their last 33 true home games.

His teams plays a high pressure, oftentimes full-court, man-to-man defense—they ranked 4th nationally in forced turnovers last season (16.4), 12th in defensive efficiency, and 5th in steals (9.1). They also shoot a ton of threes and like to push the pace on offense. They ranked 12th in points per game (80.3), 4th in scoring margin (+13.6), 16th in 3-point attempts per game (23.3), and 12th in field goals made per game (27.7).

This is also noteworthy.

UPDATE (12:17 pm, Sunday): ESPN’s Jeff Goodman is reporting Mike White is mulling over Tennessee’s offer and that it’s “not a given” he’d take the job. This is consistent with what sources told us last night—several people close to White think he’ll stay there one more year. His senior-heavy team is likely the favorite in C-USA next season and could make their first NCAA Tournament run in nearly 25 years.  Still, others who know him think he’ll take the job and that he’s reached his ceiling at Louisiana Tech. This is far from a done deal either way.

Should White turn down Tennessee, look for the search to turn to Southern Mississippi’s Donnie Tyndall.

Obviously, we’ll have more on this story as it develops.
