KNOXVILLE— This time last week Tennessee’s 2014 class had one commitment. Fast forward a few days and that number now stands at five, including two Top 100 players nationally. This morning, the top prospect in the state and the No. 2 running back in the nation, Jalen Hurd, tweeted his plans to attend the University of Tennessee.

Just a few months ago it looked as if UT didn’t have a shot with Hurd. He stated in November that he “didn’t have much of a relationship with Derek Dooley.” With Dooley gone and Jones in control of the program that obviously changed drastically. Jones has been on the recruiting trail for less than three months, yet he managed to make up tons of ground and land one of the most heralded recruits in the nation. You can find our analysis plus Hurd’s ratings, stats, and highlights below. We’ve also added him to our 2014 Commitments page.

5-star 247, 4-star Rivals
6-2, 210 pounds, Running Back
Hendersonville, TN (Beech HS)

Hurd is the No. 2 running back in the nation per 247 Sports, the top player in the state, and a member of the Rivals and 247 Top 100. He rushed for a state single-season record 3,357 yards on 317 carries last year, and scored 46 touchdowns. Hurd announced via Twitter that he is officially committed to the Vols on March 14th. Tennessee desperately needed to sign at least one elite back in this class, and keeping Hurd in-state is huge. He can run between the tackles, beat you outside, line up in the slot, and do just about anything on offense. His versatility will be a great fit for Jones’ offense. For a back of his size, he keeps his pad level low and runs through people. Hurd has great instincts and several recruiting analysts I’ve spoken with have told me they fully expect him to be a star not only in college, but in the NFL. The Vols beat out Florida, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame, and a host of other schools for his services.
