SEC Power Rankings Week 10: Vols flop against Mizzou

IMG_8233

Relative to the previous two weekends, last week’s SEC action featured very little surprise in terms of results. This week’s action has a little more spice to it with LSU and Bama clashing Saturday night. Nationally, the Thursday night games between Baylor and Oklahoma and Stanford and Oregon are must see TV as two undefeated teams face their toughest tests to date.

Anyway, here’s some SEC Power Rankings as we cross over in to the final month of the college football regular season.

1. Alabama

Last Week: Bye

This Week: 11/9 vs. LSU

The Crimson Tide’s date with the Bayou Bengals had a lot more spice to it at the beginning of the season before Les Miles’ Tigers dropped road games at UGA and Ole Miss. Still though, this is a game featuring the two best teams in the SEC in terms of top to bottom talent on their rosters. In addition, these two teams know each other all too well as they have played all-time classic games the last two Novembers. I would be shocked if Nick Saban’s minions found a way to lose this game, but LSU does have the best receiving duo in the SEC in Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr and Alabama’s secondary is not as strong as in previous years. Regardless of any of the factors going into this game, if you are an SEC fan you know what you will be watching at 8:00 Saturday night.

2. Auburn

Last Week: Won 35-17 at Arkansas

This Week: 11/9 at Tennessee

The Tigers took care of business in Fayetteville last weekend and now get to trek to Knoxville for a noon kickoff against the Vols. A quick analysis of the season statistics will reveal that Gus Malzahn’s Tigers have a significant advantage bringing their league-leading rushing attack against the Vols’ SEC-worst run defense. Are the Tigers mature enough to take care of business on the road for a second consecutive week?

3. Texas A&M

Last Week: Won 57-7 over UTEP

This Week: 11/9 vs. Miss. State

Johnny Manziel did JFF things as the Aggies rolled over the University of Texas- El Paso. Now they jump back into league play to take on a Mississippi State team that is down quarterback Dak Prescott who is dealing with the death of his mother. The Aggies should find themselves rolling in this game.

4. South Carolina

Last Week: Won 34-16 over Miss. State

This Week: Bye

The Gamecocks did what they were supposed to do against Mississippi State. Connor Shaw passed for an easy four TDs and the Gamecock defense shutdown on Dan Mullen’s offensive attack. Steve Spurrier’s team gets a bye week before jumping back into action against the Florida Gators next week.

5. Missouri

Last Week: Won 31-3 over Tennessee

This Week: 11/9 at Kentucky

Gary Pinkel’s Tigers absolutely dominated the Vols on Saturday night. They enforced their will on both lines of scrimmage and punished the Vols for their mistakes. The Tigers remain in the drivers’ seat for the SEC East crown and will enjoy another victory this weekend when they go to Lexington.

6. LSU

Last Week: Bye

This Week: 11/9 at Alabama

Les Miles’ crew also was the beneficiary of a bye before their game versus the Crimson Tide. If the Tigers have any shot all pulling off this upset it is up to Zach Mettenberger, Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. to get the Bayou Bengals’ passing attack on track. The Tigers also need their young defense to step up in their visit to Tuscaloosa. I will say this, Les Miles is due a game where he finds some bizarre way to outwit an opposing team, and Saturday could be that day.

7. UGA (+1)

Last Week: Won 23-20 over Florida

This Week: 11/9 vs. App State

The Bulldogs raced out to a big lead and then held on for dear life in the second half to score their third consecutive victory over Will Muschamp’s Gators. The Bulldog faithful are thankful to have all-world running back Todd Gurley back as he was the deciding factor in Jacksonville. Now UGA gets a home game against App State before heading down to Auburn next week for their annual rivalry game with the Tigers.

8. Ole Miss (-1)

Last Week: Bye

This Week:11/9 vs. Arkansas

The Rebel Black Bears are coming off a bye and are looking to attain bowl eligibility with a victory over the Razorbacks. Bo Wallace and the rest of that offense should find plenty of room to operate against the Arkansas’ defense.

9. Florida

Last Week: Lost 23-20 to UGA

This Week: 11/9 vs. Vanderbilt

The Gators welcome the Commodores to Gainesville after an oh-so-close loss to the Bulldogs. Will Muschamp’s seat continues to get warmer and a loss to the ‘Dores could doom the Nick Saban disciple. While we are on the topic of Nick Saban disciples, good luck to any of his assistants looking for future head coaching jobs because between Derek Dooley and Will Muschamp, you are going to have a hard time convincing any big program that you are capable of handling the job because as everybody knows, Nick Saban calls the shots, and it is becoming apparent that he’s the only one on his staffs capable of handling the show, which is probably just how he likes it. Anyways, it will be shocking if the Gators lose to Vandy, but would it be that shocking?

10.Tennessee

Last Week: Lost 45-10 at Bama

This Week: 11/2 at Mizzou

The Vols put in their most disappointing performance of the year in Columbia Saturday night. Quarterback Josh Dobbs had his ups and downs in his debut, but the brunt of that loss lies with the veteran laden offensive and defensive lines who were simply manhandled Saturday night by their undersized counterparts. The Vols secondary also had a few horrendous breakdowns reminiscent of their one year under Sal Sunseri. Put simply, the Vols got beat soundly in the areas that they were supposed to be good in, and on the road, starting a freshman quarterback against a top-10 team, that simply does not cut it. Saturday was too similar to the last three years. Luckily, it really appears that that performance will be a blip on the radar for this program under Butch Jones’ staff.

The Vols get another opportunity to make noise nationally with a top-10 opponent coming to Knoxville. Will their defense step up like it did against UGA and South Carolina or will it wilt from the get-go like it has the last two weeks against Alabama and Mizzou? Will the Vols offensive line carry the team like it is capable of? If the Vols are to pull the upset this weekend those questions will need to get answered in a big way.

11. Vanderbilt

Last Week: Bye

This Week: 11/9 at Florida

The Commodores have a prime opportunity this weekend to score another signature victory against a depleted Florida team. Unfortunately, even if starting quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels was healthy this Vanderbilt team would struggle to score on a decent defense, and Carta-Samuels isn’t healthy.

12. Mississippi State

Last Week: Lost 34-16 at South Carolina

This Week: 11/9 at A&M

The Bulldogs weren’t able to do much at South Carolina and now they get to trek to College Station and try to keep up with the high-scoring antics of the Aggies. It just doesn’t seem real plausible for the Bulldogs to get a win this weekend.

13. Kentucky

Last Week: Won 48-14 over Alabama State

This Week: 11/9 vs. Mizzou

Mark Stoops’ team notched their second win of the year. Now they welcome the SEC East leaders to Lexington. Maybe one day Mark Stoops gets this program heading in the right direction. Saturday is not that day.

14. Arkansas

Last Week: Lost 35-17 to Auburn

This Week: 11/9 at Ole Miss

Did Arkansas lose? yup. Will they lose this week? yup.
