Basketball Time in Tennessee Court Vision: Winter Is Awful Edition

IMG_6514

Bitter cold combined with awful snow to make lives miserable across much of the US this week, the deadly combination of these two awful meteorological nightmares led to commutes that produced more anger than Richard Sherman’s interview with Erin Andrews. Seriously, the month of December is allowed to be cold and snowy because it’s compatible with the holiday season. The rest of the year? Stop torturing us, weather.

With that said, we’ve all earned some good college hoops games this weekend and, because of the fact that the snow that walloped many of us is now freezing to the ground and thus, remaining a permanent fixture until April, we’ll all be indoors. Here’s your “Court Vision” to guide you through the weekend.

Remember, our short hand ranks games as follows.

Glance – A game that’s worth your time if you’re bored, or nursing a hangover with a ‘hair of the dog’ beer.

Haterade – A game you’ll hate watch despite yourself. You will hate and mock everything involved.

Reservation – a Michelin Starred quality game that you’ll make an appointment to consume.

Glance Game Of The Weekend

Michigan at Michigan State 7 PM (TV: ESPN)

Two ranked teams, in conference, both having made noise last year. Michigan’s program, after a long time in the wilderness, is now back to being of perennial interest. Michigan State has been of perennial interest under Coach Tom Izzo and has looked it all year. The big question about this game is whether Adreian Payne comes back for the Spartans. Not only is this a big rivalry game, but Michigan is the best team that Izzo and company have played since Payne has been out with a sprained right foot. Izzo said, rather dramatically, that he’s “Got the toughest coaching decision in my life to make” regarding Payne’s status on Saturday.

For Vol fans looking for a game Saturday night, this is worth a glance.

Haterade Game Of The Weekend

Georgia at Kentucky 1:30 PM (TV: ESPN 3)

It really is unbelievable that Georgia isn’t consistently better at Basketball. Athens is a fabulous college town which should, by itself, bring quality recruits to campus regardless of the coach. Yet, year in an year out, logic doesn’t prevail. It’s maddening. The hierarchy of the SEC this year, so goes the conventional wisdom, is Kentucky and Florida and then everyone else. Tennessee has a chance to distinguish itself from the muddle by winning its own games and by rooting against the success of mediocre programs in conference. But rooting for Kentucky is so against nature that this game is a perfect opportunity to dislike everything about it. So feel free to watch and seethe at the notion that Tennessee doesn’t get another shot at Kentucky in the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena and shake your head at the fact that Athens doesn’t attract better basketball players.

Reservation Game Of The Weekend

Tennessee at Florida 4 PM (TV: ESPN)

The Vols won’t necessarily be the Reservation game every week, but when they play at Kentucky and at Florida on back-to-back Saturdays, the decision is automatic. Tennessee needs this game to bolster an NCAA Tournament resume that needs some juice. Florida, meanwhile, remains a consistent winner under Billy Donovan who has done a masterful job of juggling lineups this year. Jonathan Czupryn has a nice piece here on the Florida bench and its role in the Gators’ success this year. As Reed chronicled the State of The Vols here, games like this are vital to Cuonzo Martin and the program as a whole. As you look at the rest of the Tennessee schedule, opportunities for eye-catching wins that will make the nation and the selection committee take note are few and far between. That’s what makes this Saturday vital.

Enjoy the games, stay warm and have pity for those stuck in the cold.
